Saffron & Genevieve

One of my ritual stops when I'm at home is this lovely store, Saffron & Genevieve. My mom works with the owner Colleen and from the first time I stepped through the doors I was entranced. What I love most about this store is that it is constantly changing as she brings in new items from her travels (and it's name - Genevieve is a family name for both Colleen and me. It's Forest's grandmother's name and will be our little girl's name if we have one).

Most of her objects are unique finds, but she also carries some great lines like Jonathan Adler ceramics, an assortment of beauty products, candles, cards, etc...

And now she has a whole new area of the store for me to love - her baby corner. Artist Cayce Ellison shows her original art work plus baby clothes and these precious knit mobiles.

I took SO many photos and could have taken twice as many so be sure to check them all out on Flickr here - these few are just a teaser. If you are ever in Santa Cruz be sure to stop by. You may find a treasure and you will definitely find some inspiration.

Colleen also has a blog where she posts shop updates, recent finds, shop events and more:

Phoenix

I'm out in Phoenix for the week visiting faithsalutes. We haven't seen each other since May and a visit was long overdue. Faith has done so much to her home since the last time I was here (she had just moved and we spent a lot of our time unpacking & organizing in a house with no AC). The AC is now working great and the house is coming along. We have very very different tastes and decorating styles, but I like that about us.

This morning I snuck around and took a few photos. Faith has always been good at creating little vignettes with objects. I struggle with this part of decor most of all, but she always inspires me. Here are two favorites:

Maui

We've been back from Maui for almost a week now, but I just looked at the photos today. Here are some photos and highlights from our week:

• Swimming with Sea Turtles
• Spending time with three of our best couple friends who were visiting at the same time
• Lorraine's Shave Ice in the tiny Kahakuloa Village
• Beach walks
• Stalking sand crabs - I swear you can see their brains through their shell! I wanted to inspect further, but those suckers are quick.
• Finishing three books. One really good one - Peace Like a River by Leif Enger, and two okay ones not really worth mentioning.
• Bronzing, bronzing, bronzing
• Dinners on the Lanai every night
• Flying in an 8-passenger Cessna from Maui to Kona on our way home - what an adventure.
• The Sean Paul wannabe at the airport on the way home who, when stripped of his do-rag and Stunna shades looked less like a Latin stud and more like a dorky frat boy. The best was when he did a little jig down the airport cafeteria line and flirted with the aloha shirt & hair net clad girl behind the counter. We heard him say he was from Boston.

Sunset outside our condo

The beach in front of our condo at the Papakea Resort, Lahaina

Leanne, working up the guts to jump off this cliff. I don't do cliffs myself so I just took pictures.
Water shoots up from this hole in the rocks every time a wave comes in. Dan the daredevil is seeing how close he can get.

Shave Ice at Lorraine's. She puts ice cream at the bottom. Best ever.

Old church in Kahakuloa. Lorraine says that the Christians built their church on one side, and the Catholics took the other. Missionaries had a large impact on the Hawaiian islands, as I read while I was there. They were the ones who wrote the language in the 1820's - unfortunately they weren't linguists so they didn't do a very good job. The Hawaiian language used to have many more sounds, but the missionaries couldn't tell them apart so now there are only 12 letters - a,e,i,o,u,h,k,l,m,n,p,w.

Long Time

Wow, its been awhile. We are officially back from vacation - it was lovely and we got to see so many of our friends. Our trip began in Gig Harbor/Tacoma, then Seattle, and finally onto Maui for a week. I'll do a few posts about our trip, but first here are a few photos of Pikes Place Market. This was basically my first trip to Seattle (I'd been there when I was really young). I was most impressed by the fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers. So beautiful -

So much to blog! I'll be playing catch up this week and look forward to showing more highlights of our trip. And am glad to be back to a normal blogging schedule again. For awhile there I was a bit distracted, but I really missed it. It's good to be back : )

City Boys

While I was visiting Santa Cruz for my sister's graduation I took a day trip to San Francisco with Meg and her boys. Here they are at Caffe DeLucchi, one of my favorite restaurants in North Beach:

We did a little shopping, during which the boys were very well behaved and kindly followed me around while I picked out clothes at H&M. One of them even gave hair advice to the employee helping me.

And then...AND then...

As a treat for enduring all the retail boringness we went to Kara's Cupcakes for a treat.

These cupcakes are amazing. Not very clean though...but hey, it's a cupcake, and we cleaned up our mess(es). One of my pet peeves is messy food, but with cupcakes I am willing to make an exception.

One fellow patron looked quite disgusted with the 5 of us because she actually said something to the woman at the counter about having forks because look at these boys, they can't even eat them without getting frosting everywhere. Um, believe me, we were fine with the frosting. Some people....

The littlest Nordin, obviously excited about what he is about to do with that cupcake.

The Countdown

I am struggling to get everything done so that I can be stress-free in one week, here:

This marks the 10th anniversary of my first trip to Maui. Here are some photos of me, circa 1997:

Despite what you may be thinking, I am in fact 18 in these photos, not 12. I spent a Summer there after high school with an organization called YWAM - we spent three of our weeks in the Philippines working in orphanages and visiting remote islands. This was one of the best experiences of my life, and the girl in the last photo on the right is a friend I still see and keep in touch with.

I used to go about once a year, but its been awhile since I've been back. I'm looking forward to visiting with Forest and getting a much needed start on my Summer tan. Before that we have to do a quick detour to Seattle, so today's my last day at home. Blogging has been sparse, but I think y'all will live...it's just a phase ; )

Have a lovely weekend - I'll try to post in Seattle, but if I don't I'll be back soon! Email me your address and I'll send you a postcard from the tropics.

Weekend Warrior

I feel like I've been a little absent lately, but truth is I've been so busy working that I haven't had as much time to shoot for the blog and make things as I had earlier this year...of course when I'm not busy with work I want to be, and then when I am I wish it would all go away so I can sew aprons and be crafty. I just need to get better at doing those things at night and on the weekends...This weekend however, there was no time for that but it's O.K. because I was having plenty of fun:

• Shooting the lovely Jessica & Jason's engagement session in Santa Monica (photos coming soon!)
• Picking up our new credenza for the living room, purchased on ebay. It was a steal and has the funky 50's vibe we're going for.
• Strolling through the Santa Monica Antique Mart with our friends Lindsey and Raan. I seriously get a high from that many antiques in one place. I was totally overwhelmed, but I did find a chandelier for our kitchen, also a steal...
• Walking the dogs on the beach with Kasey & Tarah, and Casey & Janelle who were visiting from Colorado
• Checking out the i Madonnari festival at the Santa Barbara Mission

Abbot Kinney Blvd. Venice, California

We like to go places, and on Saturday we took a day trip to Santa Monica with our good friends Jenna & Trevor. Montana Ave. holds their "May Sale" every year which is basically a really really long sidewalk sale. I picked up some fancy new yoga pants from Lucy, which just might actually make me start going to yoga again.

My favorite part of the trip, though, was when we drove over to Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice. I worked in LA for a year, and have friends who live there, but for some reason I have never walked or shopped on this street. Apparently I've been missing a lot, as the photos will show. I haven't had this much fun photographing "a place" in a while. Head on over to my flickr site to see them all, but here's a sneak peek:

click on the image to see all the pics

Most of these are from Bountiful, which LA.com calls "10,000 sq. feet of lovely French chaos" (via la.apartmenttherapy.com) and it couldn't be said better. There is barely room to walk, but every corner you turn comes with more awe-inspiring goodness. I may never be able to actually afford anything in this place, but it wouldn't stop me from dropping by any chance I get. You can tell the proprietors live and breathe to make Bountiful what it is. I happened upon one of them sunning on the patio amidst the rusty lawn chairs and crackled armoirs...just another Saturday to her, but a dream to most of us.

Great title for a store, because when your read it you know you have to go there.
